Declutter your home in 5 mins a day

I have dealt with clutter off and on for a long time. I love the flyladys solution. Hot spots, as she calls them, dumping grounds for stuff. She suggests you spend 5 mins a day on your hot spots. I go 5 mins a day on each of my hotspots personally because in every room in my house there is one. It makes a difference in your home overall and I break it up into categories. When I enter a room that I might have some slack time I will clean up that rooms hotspot. Example: If I go into the kitchen to make a snack I immediately go through my basket of treasures (if you will). Sort all the mail and kids papers etc that got dropped off there, all while my dinner is simmering. It amazing how much cleaner my home is with that one simple act.

Then when my husband is in the bathroom and I'm impatiently waiting my turn ( hey I am pregnant ) I'll go through my bathroom basket stuff that I've used in the last week and haven't had time to put away due to people showing up at my door unexpected, baby crying etc.

Anyway that's when I take a second and put away the nail clippers, nail file and everything else in my basket. In case you haven't yet figured out my secret to decluttering is baskets. But really it's about forgiving yourself, quit berating yourself that you don’t have the organized home of the year. If you are living a really life busy and messy like the rest of us then you might have some clutter from time to time. Even if you try to find a place for everything and swear that you are going to put stuff away from now on be real, there are going to be times that things come up. You’re doing your makeup for girls night out and suddenly beep beep your ride is here, and you find yourself running down the stairs putting lipstick on sloppily but hey you have it on today that's a plus! So then what leave it on the table no drop it in the basket by the front door for stuff like keys lipstick and other little things needed by the door. The secret to still having a semi organized house with a crazy life? Baskets!! Now I added this to the flyladys hotspot is at least add a basket to it so it's not just filling up your kitchen counter. Know where you always dump stuff forgive yourself and quit trying to pretend that someday, somehow you will stop dropping things off where they don’t go and figure out where you need baskets. Then go to Goodwill or Kohls has awesome sales, and have a blast. Pick out baskets of all types and sizes to at least cover the clutter up. I have baskets for each member of the family on the family room, because I got sick of constantly picking up after everyone. Now I just throw all the papers and other stuff in their basket and every Saturday they clean it out or I throw it away. Saturday night it goes to the trash. The kids know it and with the husband, you can't do that of course, but you can dump it out on the bed, with a little note explaining his box was overfilled and let you know if he wants help putting that stuff away, love you.

Also about the kid’s papers, a little tip, pick out a smaller basket. This is for all the keepsakes your kids will want to have forever. Each year tell the kids once they fill up their box and everything else will be thrown out or exchanged for something inside the box they don't like as well. Then at the end of the year I then pull out each child's permanent box (a much larger box). We then add the small pile to the large box for permanent keeping. this eliminates problems with papers. I also have a large clear plastic magnet frame on the fridge for each child and they get to put up a picture of the week, which can be exchanged as often as they like abut all other pictures or papers must either go in keepsakes or trash. Yaaa no clutter!!! Many more decluttering tips to come.
